This book surprised me.

The content in the beginning is really dense to get through. We follow a girl who’s life is dealt in pieces. Her sister isn’t really her sister, and her stepfather is claiming her for himself and the priest she confided in may be in danger. Built on secrets and much more, this story is not for a lighter audience. There are trigger warnings for incest, strong language, and vivid sexual content.

I quickly noticed the similarities this book has with Cinderella. But it’s definitely not the Disney version we all came to know. This modern day twist has characters who are gender-swapped and others who are under different sexual orientation. And honestly, it fits really well with this story.

Going into such an intense read, I thought I was going to have trouble with continuing on, but I flew through this book! Each chapter brings out more information that you can’t help but read. There is a slow, intense romance that develops through the pages, and it is definitely a subplot that I could tell was going to happen, but watching it unfold was half the fun.

I also enjoyed reading the diary entries of her late mother. You can tell the character’s transformation with the writing style alone, and getting that raw, behind-the-scenes look at her life outside of Ash was interesting and intriguing.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. There is a lot of drama packed into this story, and if you love a more adult romance, this is the book for you. I really enjoyed how it all played out. Between the French dialogue and the strong antagonist, you can’t help but turn the page to find out what happens next.

The retelling aspect of the story as a unique twist to the otherwise innocent original story, and it’s perfect for those who like a modern day, evil twist.

But again, this isn’t a book for a younger readers. There is a lot of strong language and vivid sexual depictions in this installment, but if you like the New Adult and Adult content, this book is for you!
