If you are a fan of the Throne of Glass series, The Remnant Chronicles is the perfect fantasy to indulge in!

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson is the first installment in this young adult series full of assassins, kingdoms, and of course, deception.

kiss of deceptionSynopsis:

A princess must find her place in a reborn world.

She flees on her wedding day.

She steals ancient documents from the Chancellor’s secret collection.

She is pursued by bounty hunters sent by her own father.

She is Princess Lia, seventeen, First Daughter of the House of Morrighan.

The Kingdom of Morrighan is steeped in tradition and the stories of a bygone world, but some traditions Lia can’t abide. Like having to marry someone she’s never met to secure a political alliance.

Fed up and ready for a new life, Lia flees to a distant village on the morning of her wedding. She settles in among the common folk, intrigued when two mysterious and handsome strangers arriveโ€”and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deceptions swirl and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secretsโ€”secrets that may unravel her worldโ€”even as she feels herself falling in love.”

My Review:

Where to start with this book??

The writing. I love Mary E. Pearson’s style of writing in this series. It was fast, engaging, and beautifully written.

I was constantly kept on my toes with the characters. This has been the only book where the title could not be more perfect. This was my second time diving into this book, and yet, I was deceived AGAIN!

I first started this book a few years ago when it was optioned on NetGalley, but due to my schooling, I wasn’t able to start it until I was on vacation. While in the middle of an epic chapter, my eBook expired which left me in dire need to continue with the sad realization that I would have to wait for until it was published.

I don’t even know how it took me this long to get back into it. I HAVE BEEN MISSING SO MUCH THIS ENTIRE TIME! Two years later, I finally was able to continue.

Mary you trickster *evil grin.* When I got to this specific part of the book, I realized that I was deceived on who was who in this book. Two years later, IT HAPPENED AGAIN! Not once, but twice. I have no clue how I missed this crucial part for a second time.

The author was a genius. She wrote a book where the reader was as confused with who was the prince as we were. And with having to re-read the first half of the book again, I was sucked into her trap once more. I would like to congratulate Mary on her epic victory and our mental demise *respective slowย clapping here.*

I loved how this book was structured. We are constantly kept on our toes. The characters experience full development along with the crazy plot. It was hard for me to put this book down.

The characters themselves were exciting and exhibited vastly different personalities for themselves, but they fit like a puzzle. There is a sort of love triangle-thing going on, but it is not like a over-used contemporary one. It’s a triangle without it feeling lovey-dovey or overused. It feels more like subtle hints, but it does not overpower the storyline. It is more about the now than about love. Which for me was a great route to take that aspect of the story.

Overall, The Kiss of Deception deserves the full 5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a fantasy quest between kingdoms, assassins and royalty. This series feels like a realistic fantasy with hints of magical powers. The abilities are subtle, but they play an important role in what their situation holds.

There are plenty of epic moments throughout this first installment of the Remnant Chronicles. that will suck you in immediately. The ending was an epic -somewhat- cliffhanger that led me so excited for Book 2.

Thankfully, waiting to read Book 1 when Book 3 is about to be released (in a month from this post’s pub date) allows me to marathon this series, so I can continue to become swept away (subtle hint for Book 2 hehehe *insert evil laugh*).

The Kiss of Deception is enticingly deceptive! ๐Ÿ™‚
